Hi!
I have intalled boinc on a new windows seven system.
I have problems with optimizerd CUDAs

Host is http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=5120050

CPU type   GenuineIntel
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6750 @ 2.66GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 11]

Coprocessors   NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS (320MB) driver: 19062

Operating System   Microsoft Windows 7
x86 Edition, (06.01.7600.00)

CUDA tasks are in error. See this:

Total GPU memory 335544320    free GPU memory 209862656

It seems it's too low value.
Try to disable aero or reduce display resolution or color bittness...

BTW, do you have errors with stock CUDA app ?

I don't know. It was a fresh install and the stock apps didn't run. I have stopped before the first start them and I have installed the optimized ones.
The same hardware was working fine yesterday with XP Home.

I Will try, next days, the suggestions you wrote.

If it worked fine with XP you almost certainly can blame Aero in Win7. This interface takes lot of GPU memory...
[Watch for free GPU memory in stderr of task. With ~256 it should work, maybe it will start to work even earlier, then you could post what features you disabled to fit CUDA MB in GPU memory under Win7. IMHO this info would be very useful for other participants too.]

Same host some, days ago, with XP Home:

setiathome_CUDA: CUDA Device 1 specified, checking...
Device 1: GeForce 8800 GTS is okay
SETI@home using CUDA accelerated device GeForce 8800 GTS

Tomorrrow I'll try to disable aero and I will tell you the effect!

Ok. Without AERO CUDA is working.

Well, I think it's possible to fine tune Aero by disabling some of effects and leaving most desirable ON if you like.
I found Aero in Win7 much more useful than in Vista. In Vista it's just waste of resources IMO.

Ok. Of course disabling totally AERO, the free mem is now  268029952 (was 209862656 with AERO on) and this value is very near to the minimum (256KB) amount of memory. So it's difficult to fine tune.... too much near to the edge, I think.

The best estimate of the actual required minimum free GPU memory is about 220 MiB, my guess is it's actually 128 MiB plus the 89 MiB the S@H CUDA code actually allocates. That would be 227540992 bytes when multiplied out.

Your "Total GPU memory 335544320    free GPU memory 268029952" says that Win7 is using 64 MiB even without Aero, which seems high to me but I'm a minimalist type  :P   I suppose it indicates you're running at 1600 x 1200 resolution or similar.

+it could be background, maybe some animated cursors and so on, windows had many candies even w/o Aero ;)

We see this on dual GPU setups (GTX295's and dual card setups). It appears that the 1st card allocates 64Mb for something, I assume for communication. It does this even under XP. It seems to be a consistent 64Mb and the 2nd card doesn't appear to lose 64Mb.

We had those hassles in BOINC 6.6.20 (ish) days. Dr A decided they must be different because they report different amounts of memory. BOINC has since been changed to allow +/- 30% variance.

I'm also having problems with the vlarkill files for win7. I have aero and whatnot turned off, and I think I still have above the minimum graphics memory, but I've gotten constant errors. here's the relevant part of my error text.

I am running windows 7 ultimate x64. does that version of vlarkill require more video ram than the x86 version? because on xp-32 which I was on a few days ago everything worked just peachy

Not CUDA MB, but Windows 7 requires much more GPU memory than XP.
Look at this:
total GPU memory 268435456    free GPU memory 123924480
Your GPU has less than 50% memory free only...

Hmm,          Total GPU memory 268435456    free GPU memory 234024960
After app init: total GPU memory 268435456    free GPU memory 123924480

The difference is 105 MiB and used to be 89 MiB, are the new drivers loading more? Perhaps the new larger cufft.dll actually puts that much more kernel stuff on the GPU, or something similar.

From earlier observations it seemed that less than 128 MiB (134217728 bytes) free after initialization was the problem area.

What new DLL you refer to? 2.3 or 3.0 ?
From my host:
Total GPU memory 536870912    free GPU memory 492482560
After app init: total GPU memory 536870912    free GPU memory 492482560

 :o  :o  :o No difference at all.
