Quick questions from a total newb
« on: 07 Dec 2006, 09:32:03 pm »
I used to run the old command line seti program. I have just installed the boinc version. I now see your optimized apps.

Is it necessary to uninstall the current boinc version before I insall yours?

What version is correct for a Winxp HE box with a core 2 duo?

Do I just follow the simple instructions you have included near the download or do I have go follow the
instructions included in "How to make your own optimized Seti@Home client for Windows"?

Thank you,
Scuiba

Hiya,

since you're using a Core 2 Duo, this version is the one I'd recommend.

Also, yes, you can just use the "simple" instructions included with the downloads, you don't have to compile it on your own if you don't want to ;)

HTH,
Simon.

O.K. I'm cooking the program you suggested. Now how can I tell if I'm getting maximal result? When I look at the task manager it says that each program is running at 50% cpu. It seems faster, but how can I be sure?

Are these clues?

That's normal.

Remember, 2x 50% is 100% too ;)

Simon.

I realise that 2*50%=100%. What I don't know is if the cruncher is faster than the regular program.

How can I tell?

You can compare WUs with similar credit.

Say, for example, you crunched some 62.xx WUs before you installed the optimized app. In the "your account" page, you can click on "computers on this account" and then on the second column from the right where it says "results online".

That will show you all results your computer has returned recently, along with credit claimed/granted and how long they took to crunch.

That's the only real way to compare, I'm afraid :)

HTH,
Simon.
