Blues related...  so why haven't the guys at Berkley tried replacing the power supply on mork.  it seems like they always take the easy road and replace something like ram, bang head on wall.  they have pulled out half the ram and it seems to help, seems like the lessened the load on the power supply. 

Sounded to me like they tried everything like that, RAM PSU etc, but that it's a mobo problem of some sort.   

Not blues, but I hope they give Mork a decent burial & play taps

Unfortunately, it was the only place they had with enough room to put them. They took up too much room leaving them out in the lab and they don't have anything else close to a dedicated server closet. They had to make do with what they were given.

And quite apart from the space consideration, there's the noise. Have you ever heard the noise a high-density rack server makes, under heavy load, with every fan running at full blast? Those things are built for speed, not comfort.

IIRC, it practically provokes a riot every time they open the closet door - they certainly can't leave the door open for additional airflow. They have to share the building with other SSL staff - if they don't at least try to be good neighbours, they might even lose what little space they have.

I'm afraid the jury is still out on the whole nine yards........

I suggested to Eric that there might have been some corruption in the mysql software, and he was going to pass along to Jeff the idea of loading the software from a current, new copy.  It is possible that something got corrupted during the AC failure, and reloading from scratch would be the only way to rule that out.

Otherwise, it's possible that mork's mobo was damaged from the overheat.  But I think that jocelyn's problems may just be related to configuration and the sheer weight of being loaded way beyond her capabilities.....

Only time will tell.......and the painful truth is that especially now, with the limited capacity that jocelyn has, any crash might take more than a day to recover from.
