Author Topic: On any projects "your computers" list, what should the string be for CPU Type?  (Read 7600 times)

When "renaming" CPUs, perhaps it would be a good thing to remove redondant info, and keep the original CPU speed ?
For example, something like

P4 Xeon MP (Cranford) @ 3820MHz [x4]  ->  Xeon MP (Cranford) 3.60GHz @ 3820MHz [x4]
P4 Pentium-IV (Prescott) @ 3402Mhz [x2]  -> P4 (Prescott) 3.00GHz @ 3402Mhz [x2]
K7x Athlon XP (Palomino) @ 1640MHz  -> Athlon XP 1800+ (Palomino) @ 1640MHz

If boinc maanger were changed slightly, and CPU names were changed from their curent format, what should the new format be?

Examples from KNA are listed above.

If you visit a BOINC statistics site, you can often view a list of all hosts in the project by CPU type.  Different operating systems, and diferent CPU manufacturers have chosen a bizzare variety of ways of displaying their cpu name.

From an optimization standpoint, we would prefer to compare (pardon my mentioning a vendor) Apples to Apples.  So if there is a question of "why is that host doing WUs faster than this other one", or "why is this host of mine so slow...it should be..." can easily be answered.

From a statistcs standpoint, organizing them makes them far easier to organize.
If we list all the CPUs by ther
Vendor,  generation, model name, model speed, number of cpus
 it would make asking questions like
"How many Intels vs AMDs are crunching?" or "How many conroes vs yonas , and how much credit is each generating?"

Example:  Which is easier to vew
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.40GHz
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.60GHz
Intel(R) Xeon(tm) CPU 2.80GHz
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.66GHz
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.00GHz
AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+

6 different listings for same CPU.
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Processor 3800+
AMD Athlon(tm)64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800

or

When comparing by groups (grouped by actual clocked Mhz speed)
Intel P4 Pentium-IV 2000->2499MHz
Intel P4 Pentium-IV 2500->2999MHz
Intel P4 Pentium-IV 3000->3499MHz
AMD K7 Athlon XP 1000->1499Mhz
AMD K8 Athlon 64 .....

Or by individual type
AMD K8 Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (Manchester) @ 2000Mhz [x2]
Intel P4 Pentium-IV 2.40GHz (Prescott) @ 2845Mhz [x2]
AMD K7 Athlon XP 2600+ (Barton) @ 1870Mhz

I forgot to mention the manufacturers in my examples, considering it's present by default.
But after all, are they really necessary ?

The majority of people know certainly which manufactured such processor according to her name.
If the name of the manufacturer is removed for simplication, that will create confusion for the beginners ?
Or some difficulties to draw up statistics - sorting datas ?

KNA,

The "vendor" name is part of the XML HOST record boinc keeps.  Its separate from the CPU string.  Usually the value kept is "AuthenticAMD" or "GenuineIntel" directly copied from CPUD instruction (by the O/S).

The web page by BOINC or the stats sites could choose to omit it if they wanted.  This boinc status site omits the value, except for certain cpu strings where they use "Intel" and "AMD" instead.
