when arrived home just updated to the latest official NVidida (296.10 x64) driver and really a nightmare no work could be done to the end in Collatz and Primegrid all CUDA work was ruined I revert to (285.62 x64) and work is running smoothly on a GTX460.
As has mentioned repeatilily across various forums, 295.xx and 296.xx drivers have a Monitor Sleep Bug, if a monitor connected to the DVI or HDMI ports goes to sleep the cuda device becomes unavailable,
eithier set the monitor to never sleep, and physically turn it off, or revert to 290.xx or earlier drivers, or 301.xx or later drivers.

Claggy
thanks for the update supposed that 301.xx still beta?

Any noticable difference from 301.24 beta ?

Updated a day or two ago, and everything is still running.

So from those testing it, is 301.42 a good choice?

I'm getting what appears to be thrashing from Diablo 3 & SETI/Collatz, using 280.26.
I ran the cache out and Diablo now has no problems...

ATI drivers package catalyst 12.6 have been released yesterday (06/28). There are now different packages for HD4000- and HD5000+ GPUs.

There is also a 12.7 Beta driver available for download.

Would be good to test known issues with new drivers too.
So, does new NV driver  hog CPU still?
Does ATi driver  can't deal with process priorities right and cause low GPU usage still ?
