Parallella: A Supercomputer For Everyone
« on: 26 Oct 2012, 05:59:57 am »
Kickstarter has a Supercomputer project on it with just 36 Hours to go, maybe in a year or so we can run Seti@home on it (as long it meets one of it's goals):

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/adapteva/parallella-a-supercomputer-for-everyone

Mike Hewson over at Einstein has a thread about it, and both him and i have gone for the 64 core Epiphany IV on the stretch goal:

I hope some of you will also donate/buy.

Thanks for writing and for your interest.

Kickstarter is currently open to project creators in the US and UK who meet the eligibility requirements included below. If you do not meet either the UK or US requirements, you will not be able to launch a project on Kickstarter.

As far as other countries go, stay tuned. If you've been waiting, we really appreciate your patience. We're working on it.

Thank so much,
Kickstarter

Sorry for the confusion! Unfortunately we can't use any other payment processors, since PayPal doesn't allow flexible payments -- that is, payments in which a pledge is made in advance, and only charged for that amount if the project is successful. Because of this, we have to use Amazon Payments, and unfortunately they only take credit cards. Sorry for any inconvenience!

I backed Planetary Annihilation - A Next Generation RTS a couple of weeks ago, they had a separate paypal donation setup on their own site, i just backed them via kickstarter rather than using their paypal method.,

Looks like the project already collected enough finances to start.

True, though with under 4 hours left it looks unlikely they'll reach the $3 million stretch goal which would include the 64 core Epiphany. The way they have the available backer levels set, it would take a lot of new or upgraded backers in the $475 to $975 categories to get there.

I just went for the single 16 core version, it's certainly more capable hardware than other Arm based boards I've seen at twice the price.

Well they passed their goal but didn't get to the strech goal ($3 million). They have setup a blog at www.parallella.org for those wanting to follow their progress.

I see they have  started a couple of competitions for those that actually have one, but the rewards aren't available until May 2013 so how do they expect people to participate?

In their latest project update they said "Together with Brown Deer Technology we created the first open source OpenCL implementation on an ARM platform.(as far as we know). "

It look like we'll be able to run OpenCL apps then if we can get support in BOINC. There is already BOINC available for the Raspberry Pi which is also an ARM based device.

The Parallella forums are up at forums.parallella.org there is even a BOINC Subforum already,
if you haven't had a user name/password email yet, you'll have reset it, and wait for the email, it takes some time to arrive.
