Title: Replacing the trusty 5770 with a 7770.

My good old XFX 5770 (reference design) is dying on me. I'm getting checkerboard graphics on the windows desktop/while browsing the web, playing videos crash the driver, as does Lunatics Seti@home apps. 3D games mostly run fine, but I also have driver restarts in games.

I have tried many thing, uninstalling drivers / sweeping them, reverting to older/newer drivers and so on. Running 12.8 now, which seems to run the best.

Only solution has been to underclock memory to 900MHz, 1000 worked at first but began producing errors. At 900 the card has worked good for some time, even crunching, but now I'm starting to get driver restarts again :(

So I have decided to replace it with a XFX Radeon HD 7770 Double dissipation.

Does anybody have any experience with the 7770 cards.
It does reasonably well in games (a definate step up from the 5770), and is more than powerfull enough for my relativiely low resolution display (1280x1024).
But how good is it for crunching. Its a GCN chip, which is more optimized for that kind of work, but also has less shaders, that are running at higher speeds.

The 5770 has done good service, but one thing I wont miss is the whining fan that came with the reference design cooler.

I replaced my XFX HD5770 Black Edition (because of lots of driver restarts, and when i did use as a display card, Graphic corruption)  with a XFX HD7770 Black Edition,

The HD7770 is about 25% faster than the HD5770, doing ATI AP work in about an hour, compaired to an hour 20mins with the HD5770,
MB v6 Wu's take about 25 mins.

OK, sounds as if the crunching speedup is about the same as the speedup in games.

Funny that both 5770's failed with similar symptoms.

And I think I'm actually getting the same version of 7770 that you have. At least a very similar card.

Guess I can expect a _little_ more speedup, because my 5770 wasn't a OC'ed Black edition, but completely stock speed.
