The other day I tried to download the new SSE app for each of my boxes.
The first day when I tried to get the right app for my boxes all I got was 7Z.
I tried again this morning and on one box it got the right app and it is running fine! ;D
Then I tried on my other boxes and never got the app again, :'( Only 7Zip.
What the devil am I doing wrong?
It did the same thing when I tried to download SSE2 app for my X2 box
Hellllp!.

<EDIT, I already have 7Zip on all of my boxes. /EDIT>

All the downloads are 7Zip archives; files with the .7z extension. You may have configured the 7Zip application to automatically open those when download completes on one box, I'm not sure how to do that for the others. But if you have the download saved someplace double-clicking it will probably open it with the 7Zip program and allow you to copy the files. If not, the system should ask you what program you want to use to open the file and you'll need to tell it to open with 7Zip.

Did that. All that gets unpacked is 7ZIP.
I've got it in 3 places now. No app info or anything but 7Z.

hi Jim_S,
Are you sure you have 7-zip installed?
You may want to go http://www.7-zip.org/ to get the latest 7-zip installer (so far 4.42) and get it installed on your computer, then you can use it to unpack those .7z file.
BTW, the lasteest WinRAR should be able to unpack .7z also.

Hi Jim_S
It sounds to me like you're trying to open the 7zip installer file rather than the chicken download :-\
what's the filename of the file you're trying to open?
-
he name of the file that I downloaded to this box is,
KWSN-2.4-Windows32-SSE2-AMD.7z
and when I try to open it, it only opens a new copy of 7-Zip into any folder that I create.
-
that sounds right then :-\
if you right click on that file, do you get a 7-Zip option in the menu?
I normally right click then select 7-Zip/Extract Here
Does the same thing happen if you try that?
-
after you've gotten to the extract here point. Think for just a second and then extract to Boinc/projects/setiathome. At least I think that is what I did to get it going correctly.
Then when it is all running again, check your task manager, you should see KWSN 2.4 running.
-
Tried again. Now I have two 7-zip folders in the SAH folder and 2.2b running in the Task Manager. :'(
{EDIT- The way i got it to install on one of my old machines was to stop getting any new work until it ran dry. Then I uninstalled BOINC and deleted the BOINC folders.
Then I reinstalled 5.10.13. Reatached everything. then I did the 2.4 upgrade again and it took. Should I try that again? /EDIT}

That seems a reasonable thing to do

that lot seems a tad like overkill.
If you've run dry of WUs there should be no need to start deleting folders.
Your main problem though is that 7-Zip doesn't seem to be working correctly on your system.
How about downloading all versions of chicken that your machines require onto 1 machine.
Unzip them all with a "right click/7-Zip/Extract Here" and then copy the resulting folders to the respective machines.
Then copy the Files To install into the seti folder on each machine
Hows that sound?
-
@ajs, Actually I only deleted the SAH folder , I misworded that statement.
However your Idea sounds good to me. The thing is 2.4 wouldn't install as long as there was any 2.2b reference.
Also the old boxes all have PRO OSes and the new one has XP home.and it has confused me MANY times in the way it handles things.
Thanks MUCH,
Jim_S

Well in about 33Minutes I'll TRY me sperment :P.
Will post back if it werks. 8)
-
Well it wouldn't install the optimized app by opening through the open command or from a download.
Just got another copy of 7-zip in the SAH folder.
At least it's running 5.27s with the stock app.
I gotta headache and give-up for now.
-
Hi Jim
Exactly how are you trying to extract the files?
As a last resort, do you have any remote access to your system so that someone could get in and see whats happening with it?
-
@ajs, still no success obviously. It could be arranged but first, could someone tell me the size of the generic SSE and AMD SSE2 files, as I think from the attacks :( I have been receiving lately >:(, that one time my hardware firewall let the whole file through and hasn"t since or could someone burn the AMD files to disc for me and I would pay shipping, handling and replacing the disc?
I have all my systems as stand alones and not networked. ::)
Thanks Very Much,
Jim Scott
PS: I am getting real desperate here. :'(

SSE generic: download (7z) 772,009 bytes. Unpacked (all folders) 4,248,005 bytes - 9 files. Executable 1,720,320 bytes
SSE2 AMD: download (7z) 765,439 bytes. Unpacked (all folders) 4,243,432 bytes - 9 files. Executable 1,723,904 bytes
If you don't have your computers networked, how do each of them contact the internet?
What country are you in? I can post from the UK, but the closer the sender is to you, the quicker you'll receive them.

I'm in the eastern TZ, USA.
Brandenburg, KY .
Im on an ADSL connection. Used to be Networked but now have no sharing between Puters allowed after an attack 3yrs ago.
Setup is through a US Robotics router and a Gigafast switch. The router has it's own firewall and there are 5 puters connected.
4 run boinc and 3 have Mcafee security and one has ZA security suite.
This box is straight to the Router and 3 are through the switch.
They are all wired because a neighbor saw fit to use my Bandwidth a couple of years ago.
I'll check my packet sizes and post later. I am running a full scan on the suspect box right now.
Thanks,
Jim Scott

Wired is best - faster, more reliable.
But wireless can be secure - you just have to enable BOTH WEP (encryption) AND MAC access control - unfortunately, manufacturers ship consumer-grade products with the security switched off, to save set-up hassle ('Works straight out of the box'). MAC access control, in particular, can be difficult to find in the setup, but it's usually there somewhere.
But if all your computers are wired to the same router/switch combination, then they are, by definition, networked together. It's just that you choose not to use the benefits of that network for file copying etc.
If you've got four computers, and three of them have a working copy of 7-zip, then you can download and expand any file you want, and copy it to the problematic machine by sneakernet (disk or USB memory stick). You don't have to use your network cables, but it'll still be quicker than the postal service.

The SSE2 download has 748kb, 15 files & 3 folders. 1.71mb unpacked.
The SSE download has 754kb, 15 files & 3 folders,1.41mb unpacked.
I was a Ceramic Tile Craftsman over 25yrs until I got totally disabled.
What little Puter knowledge I have was self taught.
I can build systems and do some setups without help. I also managed to learn a little HTML but any other coding is over my head.
I have a couple of friends that are real computer "geniuses" for real but I only see them a few times a year.
One of them pointed out my stolen bandwidth due to a MAC addy they found in one of my boxes log files.
Could be that I have no business messing with puters but they have helped me stay inSANE since becoming totally disabled.
Thanks,
Jim Scott
*EDIT- From Windows folder properties dialog box:
SSE2 (AMD) read as:
Unpacked size 2.73MB 2,868,609 bytes
Unpacked size on disc 2.89 3,035,136 bytes
107 files, 3 folders
SSE AMD
Unpacked size 2.73 MB 2,867,775 bytes
Unpacked size on disc 2,887,680 bytes

@Haselgrove,
YIKES!!! :o
Any advice? :'(
*EDIT, At least I've got the stock app running on all of my boxes now except for one old box that I managed to install the 2.4 on. :-\ /EDIT*
