Title: CUDA error
Post by: n7rfa on 12 Apr 2009, 10:27:09 am
Cuda error 'cudaGetDeviceProperties( &cDevProp, i )' in file 'd:/BTR/SETI6/SETI_MB_CUDA/client/cuda/cudaAcceleration.cu' in line 135 : initialization error.

I'm running MB_6.08_mod_CUDA_V10.exe with BOINC 6.6.20 on Windows XP equiped with a GeForce 8400GS. The driver is 6.14.11.8208 (Feb 2009).

Reboot OS. CUDA app can't be run with other graphic intensive apps like games.
This error appears when no CUDA-capable card available at all. I recived such errors when replaced CUDA-capable 9600GSO with Radeon HD 4870.

I have rebooted several times. The CUDA device is there and seen when BOINC starts, but later I get the error again and I end up with more trashed WUs.

I have just updated the driver from 182.08 to 182.50 and changed BOINC from Daemon mode. Maybe these two changes will help.

CUDA does not work properly or at all when BOINC runs in Daemon mode, so the install into normal mode should fix the problem.

It's a WinXP system, so daemon mode is possible according to what I've read. Definitely a problem on Vista, though.

Still failing out.

I'm going to switch to standard SETI@Home applications and see if that resolves the problem.

I just got exactly the same error, and some of them like below:

<core_client_version>6.6.20</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
- exit code -6 (0xfffffffa)
</message>
<stderr_txt>

VLAR WU (AR: 0.013113 )detected... autokill initialised
SETI@home error -6 Bad workunit header

File: ..\worker.cpp
Line: 144

</stderr_txt>
]]>

I'm using BOINC 6.6.20 with MB_6.08_mod_CUDA_V10.exe on Windows XP.
GeForce 9800GT with 182.50 driver.
Error WUs:http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=4876428&offset=0&show_names=0&state=5
Should I get another version like MB_6.08_mod_CUDA_V11_VLARKill_refined or else?
Thanks!

If you're using the autokill mod, then that's what it's SUPPOSED to do, DESIGNED to do - what it says on the tin.

I see, but I got most errors like n7rfa.
I suspend all MB WU at this time, running AP only.

I suspend all MB WU at this time, running AP only.
For what you doing this ???
AP can't be run on GPU at all. The best you can do is to leave BOINC as it is for now and do some board readings before next move.

Raistmer, you don't understand, all his results are error results, mixed in between the vlar killed are:

<core_client_version>6.6.20</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
\~C (0x1) - exit code 1 (0x1)

I suggest End should first try rebooting, if no change, uninstall your graphics drivers, then reinstall them.

Hi,
I got a very similar, yet different error:

Quote
<core_client_version>6.6.20</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
Unzulässige Funktion. (0x1) - exit code 1 (0x1)
</message>

setiathome_CUDA: Found 1 CUDA device(s):
Cuda error 'cudaGetDeviceProperties( &cDevProp, i )' in file 'd:/BTR/SETI6/SETI_MB_CUDA/client/cuda/cudaAcceleration.cu' in line 135 : invalid argument.

</stderr_txt>
]]>

Note it's invalid argument instead of initialization error
With a quick search I only found reports of initialization errors, but nothing on my particular error.

I'm running the SSSE3 version I just downloaded from your other thread on Windows Vista (32 bit) with GeForce 9600M GT, driver version 179.48, the latest notebook driver.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Only 180.20 and up supported.
If you can't update drivers revert to stock app, it has no such driver requirements AFAIK.

All Raistmer's app's require 180.48 or later, so you should use the stock Cuda app instead, untill a later Notebook driver is available,
(I think there is a later Beta version available via the Nvidia Cuda download page, But can't get there to check version num)

I reboot my system several times and also uninstall the driver then reinstall it again, but still the same... ::)

No GPU OCing?
Did you try another BOINC GPU-related project? Do you experience some screen distortion or other issues in games?
(in short - can you be sure your GPU hardware OK or not ?)

Same CUDA error start happen after new GPU driver 185.85 , CUDA v2.2 and last CUDA.exe app added
GPU slightly oced (temps are OK)

I'm running MB_6.08_mod_CUDA_V11_AffinityLock_NoPerfLog.exe on single GPU and AP on CPU with BOINC 6.2.19 on Vista SP1
Till now everything was OK.

Errors in different kernels, some reported for CUFFT library calls (actually they can be from prev app kernel call so diagnostic is harder.
Looks like some harware/driver problems...
