Title: How to optimize an optimizer
Post by: Chromehero on 01 Jan 2007, 06:48:21 pm
Greetings all,
Have been an S@H user for some time, only recently stumbled in here. Today, I downloaded the appropriate optimizer and installed it. Seems to work fine, but I see no improvement in speed. Specs: P4 3.00 Ghz w/ 1G RAM. Current WU is scheduled to complete after 3 hours of crunching with SETI taking up 93-98% of processor. The benchmark grid showed processing times in minutes. Am I missing something? Thank you in advance.

The benchmark tool uses some cut-down WUs that are far from full length.
IIRC they ran in a matter of minutes on my T2300, they are NOT normal WUs.
Your current (opti cruncher) WU will probably show the same estimated completion times as your previous (standard cruncher) WUs because boinc needs to process the WUs with the opti cruncher before it can adjust the estimate.
If you look at your results on the seti site, you should definately see an improvement

Hi Chromehero,

when you open up task manager, is something like "SaH_5.15_SSE2-PM-Ben-Joe-2.0B.exe" running - and using up most of the available CPU resources?

You can open task-manager by right-clicking on an empty space in your task bar and choosing "task manager" from the pop-up.

Also, you can check whether BOINC says "found app_info.xml, using anonymous platform" on startup in the messages tab.

If all that's the case, then I'd just be patient - crunch times are variable using S@H enhanced, but they're definitely going to be quicker than using the stock app.

HTH,
Simon.
