Sounded to me like they tried everything like that, RAM PSU etc, but that it's a mobo problem of some sort.

didn't sound like that to me, well at least the publicly released info. i always though stuffing the servers in a closet was a STUPID IDEA without redundant air conditioning.

Unfortunately, it was the only place they had with enough room to put them. They took up too much room leaving them out in the lab and they don't have anything else close to a dedicated server closet. They had to make do with what they were given.

And quite apart from the space consideration, there's the noise. Have you ever heard the noise a high-density rack server makes, under heavy load, with every fan running at full blast? Those things are built for speed, not comfort.
IIRC, it practically provokes a riot every time they open the closet door - they certainly can't leave the door open for additional airflow. They have to share the building with other SSL staff - if they don't at least try to be good neighbours, they might even lose what little space they have.
