GPU work being done by CPU (?)

Absolutely none, the system is stand-alone crunching only with just network and power chord attached to it.

All WinXP display settings are set to max. performance (Windows classic scheme enabled, all visual enhancing effects turned off)
 Not even a screensaver is enabled (just Energy Saving, will turn off the screen signal after 10 Minutes)...

System is cooled with 3x80mm fans and a 120mm fan (in noisy high power mode) pointing directly at the Video Card, I assume it couldn't possibly overheat even if it tried.

Well, if it will happen again maybe it's worth to report it on forums in nVidia's CUDA zone.
Will hope this will disappear with new driver release...
