What mobile CPU better for SETI app?
« on: 12 Aug 2008, 06:38:12 pm »
Hi all. Here is the same question I just posted on seti main:

I need to chose from:

2 GHz T7300 2 cores 800 MHz 65 nm 4 MB L2
and
2.10 GHz T8100 2 cores 800 MHz 45 nm 3 MB L2

T8100 probably will support SSE4.1, has slightly better frequency, but T7300 has bigger cache...

Please, some advices? (both CPUs has the same TDP of 35W)

Yeah the TDP spec will not be precise, the 65nM with larger cache will be warmer & use more power, tough choice though as to which would be faster for now, [If same GHz] I'd have to think maybe 45nM would be slightly faster, but penalised by smaller cache... so my guess is 'Even Stevens' there.  the .1 GHz might give the T8100 a slight performance edge.

My guess is to go with the newer Penryn core. The newer instruction set, slightly higher clockrate and the 45nm will give a more efficent result and the cooling solution (Notebook?) will have less work to do, because the T8100 knows more powersaving modes than old Merom T7300. And Penryn can access powersaving faster than Merom.

Sadly you did not write what the main purpose of that machine will be, because that could make other arguments (L2 size) more important.

Ah, sorry, I looking for better performance of SETI opt app on notebook.
Was convinced to go with 45-nm one.
Thanks for input!
