64 bit Win builds
« on: 15 Jun 2013, 07:40:28 am »
There used to be a 64 bit Multi-beam v6. Are there any plans to make 64 bit Multi-beam v7 and/or Astropulse for Windows?

Given the plethora of builds I could understand why not, just asking as there are a lot more 64 bit hosts around these days. While they may not give a speed benefit they may get a memory footprint improvement (not having to load 32 support libs into memory).  Happy to install it by hand.

I did try to make some AKv8c 64 bit Win builds, but they weren't successful. Time pressure to get 32 bit builds suitable for the installer forced deferral of further efforts, but I do intend to revisit that. Your point about memory footprint is a consideration I'll keep in mind, and I do have a 64 bit Windows 7 system for alpha testing.

Don't think memory footprint will be reduced. We have almost all besides FFTW statically linked. At least in MSVC builds.
x64 still worth to try due to increased register pool and different argument passing convention (more in registers rather than in stack).

[Regarding memory footprint worth to revive my DLL branch where quite a lot supporting functions were moved to SETI own DLL. For multicore CPUs such approach does reduce memory footprint.

The WoW64 stuff which needs to be loaded adds to the application footprint when running 32 bit applications on 64 bit Windows. Conversely, 64 bit applications usually use more memory because some standard types are larger. I'm not sure how the final balance will work out for our apps, but all other things being equal I'd consider smaller memory usage desirable.

WoW64 should be loaded if at least one 32-bit process running in system, right?
And it's almost impossible to not run any 32-bit processes at all just because most browsers prefer 32-bit form (chrome for example).
Also, though almost certainly I installed x64 BOINC on x64 OS (Win7x64) glance at task list showed that both boinc.exe and boincmgr are 32-bit processes. So, WoW64 will be loaded inevitably.

Both BOINC and BOINCMGR are showing as 64 bit on my Win7 x64 machines.

Chrome as far as I understand is only a 32 bit app. I haven't seen a 64 bit available to download.

yes, so anyone who has Chrome has WoW64 loaded.
Check own host - what other 32-bit processes are active?
