getting it back as bare metal, no OS. i'd been using Ubuntu linux
on it but may change. What OS would likely be best at running
SETI on it ?
AuthenticAMD
AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile Technology ML-34 [Family 15 Model 36 Stepping 2]

Have you been (un)happy with Ubuntu ?
For different kinds of linux like openSUSE, Fedora(RedHat) or Debian (Ubuntu is based on this partly) there should be not much difference in terms of overhead by OS.
Guess the OS's overhead will be your reason for choice if there is only one CPU core.
Despite the OS, any extra service/daemon, that frequently awakes, that you can switch off by configuration of OS, will give you more time for crunching SETI. For example you could check that indexing is off.
TouchuvGrey:
i was pretty content with ubuntu. i was willing
to change if there was a major advantage to be had
by doing so. That and cusiosity about open SUSE
and BSD.

I've been running Open Suse for some time now. It's as stable as other Linux flavors. it even has a usable BOINC manager in its repository
